Brollies at the ready - here comes the rain
FORECASTERS have signalled the end of Britain's hottest spell in years tonight as thundery showers and flash floods move in to cool the country off after a four-day heatwave.
While temperatures today soared to 30C (86F) at Heathrow airport, other regions - including the North, the West and Ireland - have been hit by heavy downpours which are likely to move into Yorkshire on Friday.
Parts of Ireland and western England were deluged this morning by up to 20mm of rain, while round 300 homes in Cornwall suffered a power cut after lightning strikes.
Yorkshire is set for a dry humid night but showers are due to arrive in western parts by the morning. Minimum temperatures of 14C are expected.
Friday will see cooler conditions with cloud and outbreaks of thundery rain and maximum temperatures of about 24C. While the showers are expected to be heavy at times, the region is expected to escape the worst of the weather that has led to severe weather warnings and high risk of flooding in some areas.
The region's forecast for the weekend is of dry warm weather with occasional showers. Rain on Monday is forecast to be heavy with temperatures reaching a maximum of 19C.
Victoria Kettley, forecaster for MeteoGroup UK said: "It's been a day of some contrast across Britain.
"The temperatures are likely to drop slightly from herein. The hot spell is over for now."
The current sunny spell is the hottest since 2006 with yesterday seeing the highest temperatures of the year at 31.8C (89.2F).
