Bus technology gets the green light

MORE buses could run on time when they are installed with technology to give them green lights at traffic signals around Harrogate.

The council is paying 37,000 to cover seven more junctions – including Station Parade, West Park and Parliament Street.

Last year, a trial on the Knaresborough, Starbeck to Harrogate route reduced delays for buses without affecting other road users.

Adding the technology to more junctions will also help bus operator Transdev's 36 service between Ripon, Harrogate and Leeds .

The Council will pay for global positioning system technology on buses using the chosen routes. This triggers longer green light times if buses run late.

Council cabinet member for transport Don Mackenzie said the trial showed five minute improvements. "Five minutes is a long time when you are anxious to get to your destination. There is also the added bonus of reducing carbon emissions from idling buses."
