By-election may force postponement of Queen's visit

A planned visit by the Queen to Hull may have to be postponed because it falls on the same day as the by-election being fought by Tory candidate David Davis.

The former shadow home secretary will contest the seat of Haltemprice and Howden on July 10 - the same date as the Queen's tour.

His most likely opponents include a market trader from Northampton and The Mad Cow Girl - party secretary of the Monster Raving Loonies - after Labour and the Lib Dems said they would not field candidates.

But part of the constituency covers some of the "suburbs" of Hull and the visit by the Queen, who has to remain politically neutral, cannot be construed as favouring any party or individual.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "We are seeking advice from the Cabinet Office whether it's appropriate for the Queen to visit or not."

A spokeswoman for Susan Cunliffe-Lister, the Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, whose office is helping to organise the visit said the decision may take a few days.

The by-election was triggered after Mr Davis resigned as an MP to make a "noble" stand over Government plans to increase the maximum detention period for terror suspects to 42 days

A spokesman for the politician said: "With it being a by-election we would hope she could visit and we think it wouldn't impact at all."
