Calls for controversial Hunting Act to be repealed as Boxing Day meets take place
AS thousands of hunt supporters turn out for traditional meets across Yorkshire today, fresh calls have been made for a repeal of the controversial Hunting Act.
Senior Tories have already said the ban on fox hunting could soon be repealed if they take power in the forthcoming general election.
Today, the Labour MP and Countryside Alliance chairman Kate Hoey urges "genuine supporters of wildlife" to demand the immediate repeal of a law she says is "failing at every level".
Writing in the Yorkshire Post, Ms Hoey expresses her "huge regret" as a Labour MP "that in the last 12 years the Government could not have shown as much energy and commitment on rural affordable housing, local services and rural business as they did on hunting".
Ms Hoey says the information indicates "no saving of lives and an increase in suffering" for previously hunted animals.
However, the League Against Cruel Sports, which began its Keep Cruelty History campaign in September, says an overwhelming 75 per cent of the public are still against a return to fox hunting.
Leeds MP and Environment Secretary Hilary Benn has also kicked off a campaign to support the ban today at www.backtheban.com, supported by the actors Patrick Stewart, Jenny Seagrove and Tony Robinson .
