Campaign step closer to victory as creamery's bid wins UK approval
THE Yorkshire Post's Uniquely Yorkshire campaign is a step closer to victory after UK approval was given for protection of Wensleydale cheese alongside the likes of Champagne and Parma ham
The creamery at Hawes is applying to the European Union for protected designation of origin status for Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese.
If granted it would mean that no producers outside the area could make a cheese with the same name.
The application has now been approved in the UK and is on its way to the European Commission in Brussels.
Assuming there are no objections, protected status could be awarded in the summer of 2009.
David Hartley, managing director of the creamery, hopes the special status will encourage other Yorkshire producers to seek recognition for their products in the same way.
He said: "We think it is important for regional foods to be recognised and protected.
"The creamery at Hawes can show continuity of production for Real Wensleydale Cheese back through hundreds of years.
"Yorkshire has many other original products, which are unique to the region. If we can gain a wider appreciation for the fantastic products that are part of our region's heritage we believe it will lead to more demand not only for Wensleydale but other Yorkshire products as well."
He added: "This hopefully boosts business for our farmers but is also good news for regional businesses such as B&Bs and hotels who can attract visitors by offering the type of Yorkshire fare of the quality and originality that we are asking to be formally recognised through the PDO application."
Earlier this year the Yorkshire Post, with representatives of the creamery, delivered a petition to MP William Hague in London with thousands of signatures backing the campaign.
