Campaigners set to fight Davis by-election
FORMER TV presenter David Icke and rape law campaigner Jill Saward are the latest prospective candidates to express interest in fighting the Haltemprice and Howden by-election.
Nominations for the July 10 poll close tomorrow for the by-election he triggered by former Shadow Home Secretary David Davis's resignation from the House of Commons.
He stood down two weeks ago to fight Government plans to hold terror suspects for up to 42 days without charge and what he described as the 'erosion' of civil liberties.
Ms Saward, who was a victim of the infamous Ealing Vicarage rape in 1986, said she disagrees with Mr Davis's views on the national DNA database and the use of CCTV cameras.
"Mr Davis thinks that by forcing a by election he is standing up for British Justice," she said. "In reality he is attempting to strike a hammer blow through the very tools the police need to keep us safe."
Conspiracy theorist David Icke's website said running in the by-election "is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the depth, scale and connections of the rapidly emerging - and global - Big Brother State that he has been warning about in his books for nearly two decades."
Other prospective candidates include Northampton market trader Eamonn Fitzpatrick, 58, Miss Great Britain Gemma Garrett, who secured 113 votes in the recent Crewe and Nantwich by-election, political writer Neil Glass and anti smoking ban campaigner Hamish Howitt.
Artist George Georgiou is representing the Cleethorpes-based Generalist Party, while The Official Monster Raving Loony Party is also fielding a candidate - 'The Mad Cow Girl'.
Neither Labour nor the Liberal Democrats are putting forward candidates for the by-election.
