Carer’s murals help dementia patients rekindle memories

ELDERLY residents at a South Yorkshire care home have seen their corridors brightened by a carer and art student who has redecorated with murals inspired by of memories the 1940s.

Charlotte Owen is studying for an art degree at the Barnsley campus of Huddersfield University, but has also worked as a carer at Highstone Mews, in Worsbrough Common, Barnsley for six years.

Her work has transformed one part of a corridor on the home’s dementia unit into a railway station scene complete with steam engine and carriages, while another area will depict the town’s Locke Park.

The 25-year-old said: “We asked the residents what they would like to see on the walls and they started talking about their memories of Barnsley.

“It was nice to get their input. They seem to get a lot out of seeing the pictures on the wall and they can talk about them and what they remember.

“We have still got space so we’re thinking about doing a mining mural next.”

Miss Owen said that she hoped to continue working as a carer after completing her degree, perhaps using her art as therapy.

Care home manager Karen Hugill said she and the residents were “very lucky” to have Miss Owen’s talents on tap, particularly as she had done all the work in her spare time.
