Cars attack 'linked to animal rights'
CARS belonging to a Bradford councillor and her husband have been damaged in a chemical attack while they were parked outside her home.
Coun Anne Hawkesworth said she believed animal rights activists could have targeted her because of her support for grouse shoots on Ilkley Moor.
But no one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack and police continue to investigate.
Coun Hawkesworth, Bradford Council's executive member for the environment, said she and her husband looked out of the widow on Friday morning and thought there was frost or snow on their cars, which were parked outside their Ilkley home.
"Looking out of the window my husband said it must have snowed overnight or it must have been colder than we thought, but we never thought anything about it."
Closer inspection revealed her car tyres were flat and her car was daubed in what is thought to be paint stripper. Her husband's car was also covered in the same substance.
Coun Hawkesworth's car is repairable but her husband's vehicle, a Vauxhall Astra, has had to be written off.
She fears animal rights activists may be behind the incident as they were against a decision to grant a ten-year lease for grouse shooting on Ilkley Moor. Activists have been vocal in their opposition to the move and have demonstrated against the decision.
The councillor said Bradford Council has now agreed to install CCTV cameras at her home.
