Carslberg boycott call as Tetley's 'exiled' from Yorkshire

An MP called on the people of Leeds to boycott Carlsberg lager after it was announced that Tetley's cask beer will no longer be brewed in Yorkshire.

Greg Mulholland, Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West, who has put down an early day Commons motion condemning the decision to move production of the beer out of the city to Wolverhampton, said: "The future for brewing in Leeds is now the fantastic small breweries who are committed to the area including the excellent Leeds Brewery and the exciting new WharfeBank brewery in Pool.''

After more than 180 years of proud brewing tradition Tetley's parent company Carlsberg UK announced that Tetley's Cask Ale will move to Wolverhampton under a contract with Marstons.

Under a separate contract Tetley's Smoothflow will be brewed at Molson Coors brewery in Tadcaster.

Andy Hume, Brewery Director, Leeds Brewery, said: "We looked at all realistic options in Yorkshire to brew Tetley's cask; however there was not the suitable capacity available. We needed to find the best option outside of Yorkshire in terms of quality and processes and Marston's provides this.

"Over the coming months our Tetley's brew masters will work closely with our partners, using the same ingredients and recipe to ensure they deliver the same great beer it always has been."

Conservative Shipley MP Philip Davies said: "It's very sad really and I do think businesses ditch their heritage at their peril."
