Castle brings medieval times to life thanks to young 'time travellers'

THE medieval era is being brought to life at one of Yorkshire's castles throughout this week.

Visitors to Scarborough Castle are being given the chance to take a journey back through the ages to medieval England and take part in a host of different activities which are being staged at the cliff-top venue.

Activity leaders from the Time Travellers Crew are overseeing a range of entertainment for youngsters including squire training and storytelling, as well as demonstrations of arts and crafts from the medieval era and the chance to dress up in replica period costume.

Scarborough Castle's own history dates from 2,500 years ago. It was initially an Iron Age fort before it was then occupied by the Romans. It was also a Viking settlement, although the castle reached its heyday during the reign of Henry II.

The Royal stronghold that was built by successive medieval kings over two centuries has seen more than its fair share of conflict and sieges. It was the scene of intense fighting during the English Civil War and also came under bombardment during the First World War.

The Medieval Knight and Princess Academy, which is being run by the Time Travellers Crew, will continue to run daily between 11am and 5pm at the castle until Saturday.
