Charity cyclist turns his hand to book in latest fundraising effort
YORKSHIRE adventurer Alastair Humphreys may have temporarily put away his bicycle and hung up his cycling shoes but he has found a new way to show his love of the open road.
Mr Humphreys, who cycled around the world, has edited a new photography book, which showcases cycling pictures from across the globe.
RIDE: Images from the Road may seem like a much less arduous project than his famous round-the-world journey, but it has still taken up a lot of his time.
He said: "I thought it would be easy, just a case of sending a few emails, but it's dragged on for a whole year."
"It's for charity so I had to find someone to do it for free. I found a printer in Alaska, the logo was produced in Colombia and the website is based in Spain."
The book contains photographs of places from Australia to Zimbabwe, rainforests to deserts and Sudan to the South Pole. The contributors have cycled millions of miles across almost every country on Earth.
His own achievement is almost matched by some of the other contributors' incredible journeys.
Heinz Stucke, has been cycling the globe for 40 years, Rob Lilwall recently cycled through Iran and Afghanistan and Dom Gill is currently riding from Alaska to Patagonia on a tandem bicycle – picking up passengers along the way.
The book will be available in the New Year and 100 per cent of all profits will go to the charity Hope and Homes for Children, who work with orphaned and disadvantaged children worldwide.
Mr Humphreys said he had found it hard staying in one place since his return to England. He said: "I've been trying not to get itchy feet. I've become a teacher and I got married last month. In March I'm doing the Marathon de Sables. I'm supposed to have been doing some training for that, but I've been a bit busy."
