Cheers as cyclists launch World Cup weekend

Crowds lined the streets of Pickering last night to cheer on cyclists battling for a cash prize in the Pro-Sprint Eliminator race through the winding streets of the North Yorkshire market town.

The event launched the UCI Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Cup in Dalby Forest this weekend.

Despite fears competitors would not make it because of the travel chaos caused by the eruption of Mount Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland, teams from Australia and Canada are among those taking part.

The Pickering Pro Sprint course was designed by event organisers British Cycling to test competitors' mettle and offer spectators a chance to see the drama of competitive cycling at its most entertaining, with a route that even took in someone's back garden.

It was followed by the World Cup formal opening ceremony and entertainment.
