Cinema fan stands for Tories
Bradford businessman John Pennington has been selected as the Conservatives' candidate for the Bingley ward on Bradford Council following the surprise decision by the latest incumbent Dr Colin Gill to stand down.
Mr Pennington, of East Morton, who is best known these days for his campaigning on behalf of a pressure group to stop the former Odeon Cinema from being demolished, has previous political experience. In the spring he made a failed attempted to win Eccleshill for the Tories.
He beat off competition on the shortlist for the seat from Mark Shaw, a former Young Conservative from Bingley, and Alan Chapman, a Bingley resident and deputy chairman of finance and membership for Shipley Conservative Association.
Bradford Conservative councillor Chris Greaves said: ''There is no doubt he will bring certain skills and knowledge of the business community to the party and I am sure he will work very hard for the ward.''
The election will be held on December 4.
