Cinema may make way for £13m complex

AN Art Deco cinema in Doncaster could be demolished to make way for a £13m leisure complex incorporating a casino, gym, shops and offices.

Developer Lazarus Properties bought the landmark Odeon cinema building, on the corner of Hallgate and Thorne Road, in March last year and the final film there was screened the following month.

Now the developer has submitted an application detailing plans to knock down the cinema, which was built in 1934, and replace it with a 75,000 sq ft development.

But the plans have met with opposition from campaign group Friends of Doncaster Odeon, which plans to obtain listed status for the building to prevent its demolition.

Leader of the group Ray Nortrop said: "They are entitled to make their application but the decision on our application to have the building listed through English Heritage is about to be made.

"We'll just have to let it run its natural course through planning procedure although the decision on whether the building is listed will arrive before the planning committee can make a decision on the demolition plans."

English Heritage confirmed that it had visited the site and was in the process of passing its recommendations for listing

on to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport for a decision.

It added: "We are aware now that the planning application has been submitted and therefore this is being treated as a priority case."

No date has yet been set, but it is thought that members of

Doncaster Council will make a decision on the development proposal by Wednesday, May 13.

Any casino will also be subject to the premises obtaining

a gambling licence under the terms of the Gambling Act 2005.
