City centre car park to open shortly

THE company behind the re-development of The Moor in Sheffield has announced that the first phase of the project should be up and running by the end of next month.

MoorSheffield is transforming the shopping street into a new retail centre and work is almost complete on a 674-space multi-storey car park in Eyre Street.

Development bosses say "Europe's largest full-service parking contractor" APCOA has taken on the lease of the facility and plans to open in August.

German-based APCOA, started life as the Airport Parking Corporation of America, but has since split into two companies, with the European operation being run from Stuttgart.

MoorSheffield project director John Rawlinson said: "We are delighted to have reached an agreement with APCOA Parking.

"The public will have seen construction taking place and will be pleased to know that as well as being built to an extremely high standard, we now have expertise and quality to ensure smooth running when the car park officially opens."

He said the car park "provides a much needed facility for the city centre and represents a signific-ant step forward for both MoorSheffield and the regeneration of the retail sector in Sheffield".

A MoorSheffield spokesman said of the redevelopment: "The existing retail offer will be significantly enhanced and anchored by Debenhams, a new 57,000sq ft covered indoor market and by seven new double height units, for which enabling works are well under way."
