City launches search for its next 'legend'

THE SEARCH is on to find the next hero of Sheffield.

The chosen Sheffield Legend will have their name inscribed on a plaque set into the pavement outside the town hall, in the style of Hollywood Boulevard.

Sheffield Legends recognises the city's heroes in all areas, such as arts, science, sport and industry. So far 13 celebrities have been honoured who all have a strong connection with Sheffield.

They are World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks, actor Sean Bean, musicians Jarvis Cocker and Joe Cocker, athlete Sebastian Coe, footballer Derek Dooley, boxing trainer Brendan Ingle, rock band Def Leppard, designer David Mellor, writer and comedy star Michael Palin, artist Joe Scarborough, astronaut Helen Sharman and rock climber Joe Simpson.

The Lord Mayor, Coun Arthur Dunworth, said: "This is an ideal opportunity to nominate those individuals and groups who have brought recognition to Sheffield at national or international level.

"We already have some wonderful legends in our 'walk of fame' and there are several personalities who have a strong claim to join them.

"I hope everyone will send in their favourite local hero to make our Sheffield Legends truly representative of the celebrities from many walks of life associated with this city.

"The aim is to keep the Legends topical, so the remit for the nominations is for people who the public can relate to today."

Those eligible for the awards must either have been born in Sheffield or have a very strong association with the city.

Nominations should be sent to the Lord Mayor, Sheffield City Council, at the Town Hall, Pinstone Street, Sheffield S1 2HH, marked Sheffield Legends or by e-mail to lordmayor@sheffield.gov.uk by Friday, April 25.
