City mosques condemn 'suicide bombing' children's DVD
MUSLIM leaders in Bradford have called for a crackdown on the distribution of extremist material promoting terrorism after a DVD which appeared to glorify a suicide bomber was discovered on sale in the city.
The music video, which shows a young girl singing about following in the footsteps of her suicide bombing mother, was said to have been bought in a Bradford mosque.
Bradford Council for Mosques spokesman Ishtiaq Ahmed said: "We are very concerned about the fact that this material is on sale and could prove to be provocative. Children and families are being exploited and it is not something we encourage or support.
"If people come across this material they should destroy it and contact the authorities.
"It is not something we have been aware of before. We have seen people distributing leaflets but not DVDs like this."
As the Yorkshire Post revealed yesterday, the DVD was bought in Bradford – home to two of the four July 7 suicide bombers and the location of a bomb factory for the attack – and distributed by a Leeds firm whose address and telephone number are on the cover.
All three of the DVD's tracks are sung by children in Arabic with English subtitles.
The first song is about two children who lose their mother when she becomes a suicide bomber.
It believed to be a reference to Reem al-Reyashi, a 22-year-old Palestinian mother-of-two who blew herself up on January 14, 2004, at a crossing, in the Gaza Strip, killing four Israelis.
Shipley MP Philip Davies, who was given the material by a Bradford resident, said: "I find it incredible that this was being distributed by someone in Leeds who is prepared to put his contact details on the back.
"I am concerned about where this goes on sale but more important is cutting off the supply in the first place."
He called for action to be taken against the Leeds-based distributor of the DVD.
The Yorkshire Post has given a copy of the DVD to the West Yorkshire Police's counter terrorism unit which is investigating it.
