Civilian workers and soldiers at risk after blood mix-up
SIX British civilians as well as 18 soldiers working in Afghanistan or Iraq may have been exposed to contaminated blood provided by the US military, it has emerged.
The British soldiers, who were seriously wounded, are undergoing tests after it emerged the Americans did not follow their own procedures and test the donors after they gave the blood.
The Health Protection Agency said the GPs of all six affected civilians had been informed.
But it has admitted because of the holiday period some of the doctors may not yet have told their patients. Testing and counselling is available for those affected.
The US Department of Defence said the American donors who provided the blood had now all tested negative for hepatitis and HIV.
But the British soldiers are still facing a wait to learn the results of their own tests for blood infections.
It is believed that all 18 soldiers have been found and informed of the risk of infection.
