Council scaffolders hit by parking tickets in mix-up
parking wardens hit a team of scaffolders with hefty fines – despite the fact they were carrying out work on behalf of the same council.
The officials targeted three trucks offloading scaffolding at the site in Halifax, ignoring the fact the men were doing vital maintenance work for the same employers.
The fines totalled 140 – and even included Malcolm Speak, managing director of Haven Scaffolding, employed by Calderdale Council to carry out the work. He received a 35 charge, which was incurred as he attended a site meeting with council bosses.
Mr Speak said: "It is ridiculous when we are doing work for the council but still get ticketed by them. It's like the different departments don't even talk to each other. We had been unloading all the equipment since 5.30am that day and had unloaded about 20 tonnes of scaffolding."
The latest charges come just days after nearby market traders slammed wardens for slapping them with tickets despite unloading within the half-an-hour allowed. One has had four parking fines since April and is facing a visit from bailiffs after refusing to pay the 500 fine.
Calderdale's network manager, Nigel Pickles, said: "A special exemption is required for contractors who have a genuine need to have their vehicles nearby whilst undertaking major repair work such as that needed at the Market Hall, but it had not been requested.
"In view of the circumstances in this instance, it is likely that the tickets will be waived."
