Council to target bad parkers
MOTORISTS will be banned from parking on grass verges in certain parts of Rotherham from next month.
A pilot scheme begins on November 3 to tackle what Rotherham Council describes as "inconsiderate" and "convenience" parking, which is particularly prevalent on the main roads into the town centre.
From that date, anyone parking on the verges will have to pay a fine of 35, which rises to 70 after 14 days.
A council spokesman said: "Residents tend to be aware of the need to keep the carriageway clear of parked vehicles, so parking often happens on footways or grass verges, which can obstruct the footpaths and cause severe damage to verges.
"Following discussions with South Yorkshire Police, the council has introduced traffic regulations orders to prohibit verge parking for a number of roads in the borough where this has been identified as a problem.
"The pilot scheme will be monitored for up to12 months initially and, if successful, further schemes are planned to be rolled out elsewhere."
Councillor Gerald Smith said: "Parking on verges and footways has become a problem in some parts of the borough and we hope residents understand the reasons for introducing this pilot scheme. We hope the measures will also give a better impression to residents and visitors along our main routes."
