Court orders pair to pay back £60,000
MORE criminals have had their ill-gotten gains seized by police in West Yorkshire.
Two from Leeds who lived a life of luxury will have to pay back more than 60,000 after they were made subject to a confiscation order at Leeds Crown Court yesterday.
Amjad Hamid, 29, of Hyde Park and Leena Parmer, 27, of Hawksworth, have to repay 53,000 and 8,000, respectively.
The pair were arrested in 2005 and were later convicted of money laundering.
Hamid spent money on a Chanel watch, a Volkswagen Golf VR 32, a Bang and Olufsen TV and speakers, two quad bikes and a Vertu mobile telephone valued at 3,000. Parmar had allowed her bank accounts to be used for cash deposits.
On Thursday Lee Harvey Burrell, 37, from Liversedge, was ordered by a judge at Leeds Crown Court to hand over 50,000 or face 18 months in jail. Burrell was arrested in Wakefield in August 2007 after police found 10,000 ecstasy tablets and six blocks of cannabis in his car. He was sentenced to six months in jail.
Since April, 83 similar confiscation orders have been granted by courts in West Yorkshire, resulting in over 2m of assets seized.
