Cow with spirit puts kick into whisky ice cream
A speciality ice cream with a "bit of a kick" has been launched by a family of Peak District farmers, inspired by the bullish nature of one of their oldest families of cows.
The new whisky and ginger flavour has been named after Gertrude the cow who has an unfortunate habit of regularly kicking members of the Marsden family, who run Hope Valley Ice Cream from Thorpe Farm in Hathersage.
And Gertrude is not the first in her line to be leaving the Marsdens with bruises.
The animal's parents and grandparents were also prone to kicking previous generations of Marsdens, who have had milking cows in the Hope Valley for more than three centuries.
Jane Marsden, who runs the farm with her husband John and their children, Bob, Jonathan, James and Sarah, said: "We do different flavoured ice creams and we've named then all after different cows in the herd.
"Gertrude suits the whisky and ginger one because she's got that sort of character – she comes from a fidgety family."
Gertrude's Whisky and Ginger ice cream, which is made from the milk from the Marsden's herd, also picked up two awards at this year's Bakewell Show. It came out on top in the ice cream category as well as winning the title of best dairy product in show. Mrs Marsden, who said she was "gobsmacked" to win the top award, said the flavour was particularly popular with men, who may not ordinarily choose to have an ice cream.
She added: "It's an unusual flavour."
