Craftsmen create new dome to top historic Charterhouse's belltower
CRAFTSMEN have been putting the finishing touches to a new dome on one of Hull's most historic buildings.
Although it looks more like a flying saucer now, the carefully-crafted piece will sit atop the Grade I-listed Charterhouse, off Charterhouse Lane in the city centre, replacing the old dome, which was leaking.
Founded as an almshouse during the Middle Ages, the Charterhouse still provides a home for people today. The old dome has been on top of the belltower since 1780 when it was rebuilt.
The Master of Charterhouse, Canon Stephen Deas, said: "The old cupola served well for over 200 years and we are hoping the new one will serve as long."
The work has been carried out at bespoke joinery manufacturer Batty Joinery, on West Dock Lane, Hull. A team of joiners spent four weeks crafting the new dome nearly three metres wide, with decorative moulding on the outside and containing an oak frame from which the bell, which rings for chapel services, is hung.
It will be hoisted by crane to the top of the belltower later this month with fingers crossed that it fits first time and will eventually be sheathed in lead.
The Charterhouse was founded on its present site in 1384 by Michael de la Pole, first Earl of Suffolk.
