Cupola rises from flames to crown historic hall
ONE of Bradford's best-loved landmarks was brought back to life yesterday, as the cupola was returned to crown Eastbrook Hall.
The magnificent, ornate dome was replaced after two years of diligent restoration.
The lantern part of the cupola – a timber dome which has been recoated with green fibreglass – was hoisted into position on the very top of the dome, sitting upon 350 large original restored stones.
It was removed to allow careful piece-by-piece reconstruction by specialist stonemasons after it suffered major fire damage in 1996.
Set in the heart of Little Germany, Eastbrook Hall is being developed into 73 apartments by Aldersgate Estates. Maud Marshall, chief executive of Bradford Centre Regeneration, (BCR), said: "Replacing the cupola to its original position is a significant moment in the life of this landmark building. Eastbrook Hall has been sensitively revived and developed for modern use while retaining many of its historic features.'' The restoration is funded through a public/private sector funding agreement between English Partnerships, BCR, Bradford Council, the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward and Regen 2000. The Prince's Regeneration Trust also supports the scheme.
Chief executive of the trust Ros Kerslake said: "Eastbrook Hall is one of the most spectacular buildings in Little Germany. It is wonderful to see the principal faades and cupola beautifully restored.''
Tony Marsh, director of Aldersgate Estates, said: "Eastbrook Hall has played an important part in the lives of the Bradford people.
"This completes restoration of the ornate exterior of the building back to its former glory."
