Dale farms revive creamery tradition
DAIRY farmers in a Yorkshire dale will begin supplying their milk to a creamery for the first time in 25 years after a deal was struck to include more farms in the production of Wensleydale cheese.
After the closure of a creamery in Coverham in 1984, Coverdale farmers no longer supplied milk to produce Yorkshire cheese.
But now the tradition is being revived as three Coverdale farms are set to join Wensleydale Creamery's milk producer group of more than 40 local farms.
The newcomers will supply the creamery with three million of the 17 million litres of milk needed each year.
W.N. Avison and Sons, of Middle Fields Farm, Melmerby, has joined the group while two more farmers, Kevin Uttley and Derek Pearson will start supplying the creamery from November.
Andrew Avison, 33, is a third-generation farmer and runs the business in partnership with his father Michael. Andrew's son William, eight, is already taking a keen interest in farming and looks like following in his father's footsteps, making it a fourth generation family affair.
