Deal agreed on refuse workers' pay
COUNCIL chiefs in Bradford have reached a deal with unions over new pay and conditions for the district's refuse workers, it was announced yesterday.
The agreement averts fears of industrial action following a highly-damaging 11-week strike by refuse workers in Leeds which ended last month.
Moves towards equal pay have meant councils all over the country have removed bonuses from workers where it was considered unfair to other staff.
Bradford Council officials say they spent 10 months negotiating with unions to find a way of removing bonus payments while still ensuring workers were fairly rewarded. Now an agreement has been reached following a ballot of staff.
Under the deal, the council offered staff the chance to make up for losing their bonus by taking on other duties or working additional hours.
Some staff will gain and some will lose under the deal but council chiefs say they have worked hard to ensure the "fairest outcome for all".
Bradford Council chief executive Tony Reeves said: "We're confident we've done all we can to reward them fairly and appropriately, within equal pay legislation."
Council leader Kris Hopkins said said he was glad an agreement had been reached. "We value our staff highly and recognise the excellent work they do for the people of the district."
A spokesman for unions involved said: "These have been very difficult negotiations.
"Our members are required to make considerable sacrifices and changes to their working lives that will improve the service for the people of Bradford and hopefully maintain their earnings."
