Detective arrested in fraud inquiry

A SENIOR detective with South Yorkshire Police was arrested by a neighbouring police force investigating fraud and money laundering, it has emerged.

Det Insp Shakeel Ahmed, who serves with Doncaster CID, was among 10 people arrested in Wakefield on Wednesday in a series of raids by West Yorkshire Police.

The ten, which included one woman, were questioned and released on bail pending further inquiries.

Items recovered during the raids included about 150,000 in cash, 14 luxury cars and a large amount of gold jewellery.

Officers also uncovered a suspected cannabis farm.

The raids took place on homes and businesses in the Sandal and Agbrigg areas of Wakefield.

The cars included a Maserati, three Jaguars, two Mercedes, a Volvo, BMW X5, Mitsubishi Shogun and other BMW models. All but one were found at one location in Agbrigg.

The Maserati was removed from an address in the Sandal area. The cannabis farm was in Warwick Street, Agbrigg.

Police said the operation was to target fraud and money laundering and the items had been seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Nine were arrested in Agbrigg and one man in Sandal.

They were questioned by detectives at Wood Street police station in Wakefield.

Det Insp Paul O'Dowd, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "These people have been arrested in relation to a money laundering investigation.

"Wakefield district police have invested money to set up a financial investigation unit to deal with this type of investigation which involves criminal property being converted into cash and made to appear legitimate."

Those arrested range in ages from 29 to 39.

South Yorkshire Police declined to comment.
