Director's insight into Hepworth gallery work
THE Hepworth Wakefield will open its doors in advance of its official opening next year to give people a sneak preview and learn a little about how the plans for the gallery were developed.
Gordon Watson, project director, will give the talk on Wednesday and will also speak about the wider regeneration of Wakefield's waterfront and what the new gallery has in store for 2011.
The museum will show a previously unseen collection of sculptures by Barbara Hepworth – one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century, who was born and raised in Wakefield. It will also bring international contemporary art and art historical exhibitions to Yorkshire.
Mr Watson said: "My talk will present an opportunity for visitors to hear about the international design competition that led to the selection of David Chipperfield Architects, and how the designs and plans for the gallery were developed.
"I will also give an insight into our plans for opening in spring 2011 and how The Hepworth Wakefield will form part of a wider regeneration of the Wakefield waterfront and the city."
Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration and culture, said the talks would give visitors an insight into what the building will offer when it opens next year.
The talks are part of the Artwalk, a series of free evenings of art and culture across Wakefield. The partially-complete gallery will open its doors on selected evenings so people find out what is happening at The Hepworth Wakefield over the coming year.
Wednesday's event is free and there is no need to book, people can just turn up on the night. The museum is open 5-9pm, with talks at 6pm and 8pm.
