Dive in to a different environment at art show that makes a splash

ART exploring the impact of climate change on waterways is on display throughout February.

The Rivers Movement project, which focuses on the River Dearne, as well as the rivers Aire and Calder in West Yorkshire, is a collaboration between artists from Barnsley and people from Gujarat in India.

Together, the two groups have been exploring common experiences involving local rivers and the impact climate change has on their lives.

The exhibition, which is now open at Emergence Pod One at May Day Green in Barnsley, consists of works by 12 painters and photographers and two installation artists.

One of the artists, Lee Gascoyne, has painted a picture of a graffitied wall by the River Dearne. He then linked Barnsley to the Hindu Festival of Holi by throwing coloured powder at the painting and flooding it with water to bring it back to its original form.

Both the painting and a video installation showing how it has been altered are on display.

Mr Gascoyne, 37, said: "Hopefully the exhibition will stimulate people's interest in the river and also in climate change.

"It's a mixed media exhibition so has everything from oil paintings to digital prints and artwork by local schoolchildren."

This workshop is open between 10am and 4pm daily.
