Drink-drive father and son banned by court
A FATHER and son who got drunk at a wedding both ended up being banned for drink-driving after police caught them at the wheel of the same car 40 minutes apart.
Aliksandrks Iljins, 25, tried to drive the bridegroom's car home from his sister's wedding despite being nearly four times over the drink-drive limit.
He was arrested after police saw him swerving in the road early on October 19; less than an hour later officers were amazed to see the same Alfa Romeo on the same road in Goole.
They found the car was driven by Aliksaandrks' father Sergeis, 50, who was so drunk he stalled the car trying to change gear.
They have now been handed community punishments and banned from driving.
Prosecuting at Goole Magistrates Court, Alex Quigley said after the wedding reception finished, Iljins junior gave a lift to his parents and a family friend in the bridegroom's car.
He was stopped at 12.20am, two miles into his four-mile journey, and was arrested after refusing to take a breath test.
But Iljins senior retrieved the car and attempted to continue the journey. He was arrested after stalling at traffic lights.
Mr Quigley said that Iljins senior was "unsteady on his feet" after leaving the car, and was at the "same level of intoxication as his son".
The pair took breathalyser tests and were both found to be more than three times over the legal driving limit.
Defending, David Lockhart said that the younger man was given a lift to the event by his sister's new husband. He was not expecting to be driving and had a fair amount to drink.
Iljins junior, of Normanton, West Yorkshire, had a previous drink driving conviction. He was given a 20- week prison sentence suspended for a year and will have to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work. He was banned from driving for three years.
His father was given a community order with 100 hours unpaid work and banned for two years. They were ordered to pay 60 costs.
