Drive-by shooting gang-related say police as city murder toll grows
POLICE investigating a drive-by shooting in Sheffield in which a 22-year-old man was murdered have confirmed the killing was gang-related.
The shooting brings the total number of gang-related murders in Sheffield to eight since 1999.
The man, who was last night named by police as James Kamara, from the Pitsmoor area of the city, died on Brunswick Street, Broomhall.
Three men who were with him also received gunshot wounds in the attack at 6.30pm on Wednesday. One of them, who is seriously injured, remains in the Northern General Hospital with wounds to his chest, hand and leg. Police have revealed that the three injured men are all in their twenties and from Sheffield.
Chief Superintendent Paul Broadbent, South Yorkshire Police district commander for the city of Sheffield, said: "This was a targeted attack involving two small groups of people who happened to be in the Broom-hall area. We believe this was gang-related. During the attack at least one firearm was discharged and a young adult male received fatal shot injuries."
Mr Broadbent confirmed that the two groups of men involved were known to the police, and they are involved in criminal activity.
One person has been arrested in relation to the killing, though Mr Broadbent stressed that was "not a principal arrest in respect of the murder".
