Driver arrested over fatal A64 crash
THE driver of a coach involved in a crash which killed two people in Yorkshire was today arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The 52-year-old man from Staffordshire was taken into custody by North Yorkshire Police earlier today for questioning following the double fatal collision on Sunday.
A man and a woman, both thought to be aged in their late 30s or early 40s and from South Yorkshire, were killed instantly when the coach collided with their grey Volkswagen Passat on the A64 at the bottom of Staxton Hill.
About 50 children and adults were travelling on the bus, including members of a marching band on their way to a competition at the Primrose Valley Holiday Park.
Six passengers were hurt and four needed treatment at Scarborough District Hospital following the crash shortly after 9am on Sunday.
The driver of the coach was treated in hospital for a wrist injury before he was discharged yesterday and then arrested earlier today.
Following the collision at the crossroads where the A64 runs across the bottom of the B1249 Driffield road, the coach plunged through a hedge into a field and collided with an empty camper van.
The two dead victims of the crash have yet to be formally identified.
