Drivers walk out over pay dispute

BUS drivers in South Yorkshire are set to go on strike again tomorrow in an ongoing dispute over pay.

Drivers for the bus company Stagecoach have already walked out in November, December and January and will strike again on Saturday, February 4; Monday, February 6; Wednesday, February 8 and Friday, February 10.

The industrial action affects services in Barnsley, Rotherham and the Dearne Valley, but not in Sheffield and Cheaterfield.

The move comes after Stagecoach drivers rejected a 5.5 per cent pay increase, which equated to an offer of £9.05 an hour.

Paul Lynch, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “We are very disappointed that the Unite trade union has announced further strikes in Barnsley, Rotherham and the Dearne Valley.

“But as with the previous strike dates, our priority is ensuring the majority of passengers are unaffected by the industrial action and, with our robust contingency timetable, any disruption will be kept to a minimum.

“In a challenging economic climate, in which many local people are losing their jobs or having their pay frozen or reduced, is very frustrating we have not been able to reach an agreement.”
