The Schools Secretary reimbursed the Commons authorities 1,350 after falling interest rates meant he had overestimated monthly mortgage interest claims.

For 11 months, Mr Balls claimed 1,000 to cover mortgage interest but alerted officials after receiving an end-of-year statement revealing the exact amount he had been paid. His only other claims were for council tax, electricity, water, house insurance and alarm servicing – all halved with wife Yvette Cooper.
