Enjoy it on video: School Proms at York Minster
Hundreds of children from York's primary schools performed at the city's Minster yesterday as a warm-up to a concert in one of the world's most famous venues.
A 1,000-strong audience was at the cathedral for the preview concert performed by 500 children from 11 primary schools in the York area before the pupils head to the Royal Albert Hall in London.
They will be in the capital on Monday next week as part of the Music for Youth Schools Prom, which will see 34 groups from across the country perform over three days.
The York children will be the youngest and largest group when they perform a piece inspired by the 350th anniversary of the birth of the composer, Henry Purcell.
The piece is called Ode on the 350th Birthday of Mr Henry Purcell and has been written by composer Dr Richard Shephard, who is also York Minster's chamberlain.
The children have been trained by the York-based National Centre for Early Music which has been working with the national singing programme, Sing Up.
They will be directed by Susan Hollingworth, the musical director of the Scunthorpe Co-operative Junior Choir.
She said: "I am sure this will be a moment in their lives that they will never forget."
