Enter the dragon: Watch as paddlers limber up for boat race
FOUR 40 feet craft, up to 16 paddlers in each, plus a time-keeping drummer - the Leeds dragon boat race is on.
The 2009 Dragon Boat Race has been organised by The Leeds Community Foundation who play a crucial role in raising and distributing funds in the City's most disadvantaged communities.
Last year's race proved such a success for the foundation that this year it is being held across Saturday June 27 and Sunday 28.
Each of the 40ft dragon boats holds up to 16 paddlers plus one drummer at the helm. Each team will compete in three heats along the stretch of water at the far end of Clarence Dock. Teams will race in twos and be paddling frantically to beat the other team into the semi-finals and of course the final whereby a winner is crowned each day in a ceremony at Brewery Wharf.
It is a free event that organisers say relies on the generosity of people coming along to enjoy entertainment that not only includes the racing but an arts and crafts fair, 25 live acts, food and drink market, fancy dress and a treasure hunt.
