Estate to host walks and talks for fungus fans

FUNGI are the subject of a series of events on the Longshaw Estate in the Peak District over the next few weeks.

Various walks, arts and crafts activities and photography sessions will staged to highlight the vast array of organisms in the area.

The Longshaw Estate, near Grindleford, is a nationally important site for waxcap fungi. There are over 40 species in Britain but many are becoming increasingly rare as old grassland sites are built upon or are ploughed.

Longshaw and High Peak Estate property manager Mike Innerdale said: "Longshaw is the perfect place to celebrate our fascinating fungi.

"This series of events will enable visitors to find out more about these amazing fungi that are mini-recycling machines.

"Underground they are processing dead matter, leaves, animals and wood, producing vital nutrients which help trees and plants to grow. Why not join us to find out more?"

The first session, for families, takes place on Sunday with a walk that begins at 10am and will be followed by hands-on activities in the Moorland Discovery Centre. Tickets cost 3 for children and accom-panying adults go free.

On October 14 and 25 a free walk on the theme of "The Fungal Delights of Longshaw" has been organised, starting at 12.30pm.

Arts and crafts activities for children up to 11 take place at Moorland Discovery Centre from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday, October 28, and there will be a "Fungal Photography" class on Thursday, October 30.

The last event of the season takes place on the same day with a talk from an expert on fungi in the Moorland Discovery Centre.

Tickets cost 5, which includes a bowl of mushroom soup.
