Ex-Leeds director Simon Morris arrested in fraud and money-laundering probe

PROPERTY mogul Simon Morris was in custody last night after police staged a series of raids as part of a major investigation into fraud and money laundering allegations.

The former Leeds United director was arrested along with seven other people during raids in Leeds, Bradford and Wolverhampton as part of an ongoing investigation into claims of money laundering and conspiracy to defraud.

Bubble bursts for Leeds Utd tycoon who once had it all

Mr Morris's luxury home in Ling Lane, in the pretty village of Scarcroft, Leeds, is understood to be one of the addresses targeted by members of West Yorkshire Police's Economic Crime Unit.

The property developer's offices were also raided by police officers, who were seen taking away filing cabinets.

There was also a police presence outside Mr Morris's father's home in nearby Wetherby Road, Scarcroft. Bryan Morris is a former spokesman for Leeds United.

No one came to the door at either address yesterday, but there were a number of top-of-the-range luxury cars parked in each of the driveways, with personal number plates including the initials "MOR".

The Yorkshire Post understands the 31-year-old property developer is among those in custody. Police officers dressed in blue protective suits were seen entering and leaving his home at breakfast time.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Three men from Leeds, three men from Bradford and a man and a woman from Wolverhampton are currently in police custody being interviewed by detectives.

"We will not identify any person who has been arrested until such time as they may be charged."

Yesterday's arrest marks another low point in the spectacular downfall of a man once estimated to have amassed a fortune of around 69m and who featured at number eight on the Sunday Times Young Rich List.

Just last month he was made redundant from the business empire he created. SRM Holdings and 36 subsidiary companies were placed under the control of the Leeds offices of insolvency firm Begbies Traynor.
