Exhibition marks Yorkshire Bank's 150th anniversary
A NEW exhibition to mark Yorkshire Bank's 150th anniversary will be held in Halifax next month.
Following an appeal for memories and memorabilia, the bank has been inundated with customers' hidden gems dating back to 1874, including paying-in books from Yorkshire Penny Bank, old photographs and money boxes.
The exhibition will launch on May 1 at Bankfield Museum and will run throughout May. Admission is free.
The museum in Boothtown played a significant role in the history of Yorkshire Bank, being the former home of its founder, Colonel Edward Akroyd.
Yorkshire Bank has been fortunate in being largely unaffected by the turmoil which has affected many British banks following their exposure to the disastrous sub-prime lending in America.
Edward Riley, from Halifax, is a distant relative of the Colonel. He said: "One of my ancestors, Mary Riley, and Jonathan Akroyd married in the 1700s and Colonel Akroyd was their great-grandson.
"The couple founded the hugely successful textile manufacturing business which in due course provided the funds for Colonel Akroyd's great generosity in the town.
''It's an honour to be able to trace our family back to such significant roots and to play a part in Yorkshire Bank's 150th anniversary celebrations thanks to my ancestors.
Richard Gregory, Yorkshire Bank chairman, said: "I'm delighted at the response we've had to our memorabilia search. The artefacts we've uncovered and the stories people have come forward with have been fantastic and really celebrate the history of Yorkshire Bank.
''I'd like to thank all of the people who have kindly lent us their memorabilia and told us their stories for our exhibition. The level of support we have received on this demonstrates what an integral part of customers' lives the Bank has played over the years. And I hope we shall continue to do so for the next 150 years."
Yorkshire Bank now operates 190 branches and employs more than 1900 people across the county.
