Experts bring bugs and germs to life

Sixth Formers were given some potentially life saving facts on infection control yesterday.

Experts in microbiology visited Harrogate High School to help students like 17-year-old Samantha Brown, pictured, to look at infection control and antibiotic resistant bacteria including MRSA.

The visitors were led by Professor Kevin Kerr, director of infection prevention and control, and Kath Banfield, matron for infection control at Harrogate District Hospital. The staff from the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust were working with Year 12 BTEC Science students and Year 13 A level Biology students in the practical session.

As well as destroying some myths surrounding bugs and germs, the sessions provide a useful hands-on guide to bacteria to aid the students' under-standing of infection control.

Prof Kerr said: "Going into schools and sharing what is essentially real-life science is an extremely valuable way to get across simple facts about infection control and antibiotic resistant germs. Not only does this give us a chance to develop the knowledge and skills of the microbiologists of the future, but it also means we can reach young people with some very simple, and possibly even life saving, facts on how infection control is everyone's business."
