Family to run in memory of mother
A YORKSHIRE father whose wife died of cancer in the same week that Jane Tomlinson passed away has signed up to run the Leeds 10k race – despite not having done any running for years.
Jack Firth will be joined by sons Joe, 15, John, 18, and Scott, 24, to run in memory of their mother Angie, who died of lung cancer in September 2007.
All money raised will go to Cancer Research UK.
Mr Firth, of Farsley, Leeds, who has his own building business and employs Scott, a joiner, and John, a bricklayer, says his training for the June 21 event was going a little slowly.
"I've just started running and it's killing me," he joked. "I hate running – it seems pointless. At least when you are playing football you are chasing a ball around.
"I am running twice a week and am up to three miles."
Mr Firth stopped playing football for the Cardigan Arms pub at Kirkstall, Leeds, about seven years ago and admits he might be a bit out of shape:
"I have never run this far in my life. The furthest I have run is a three-mile cross-country run at school."
