Fans get knitting to win cup matches
People in Yorkshire – including Lesley Fidler and members of the Leeds-Bradford branch of the Knitting and Crochet Guild –are being encouraged to get their knitting needles out and create the world's longest football scarf. The challenge will support the city's campaign to become a host city for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, if England is selected to host the competition.
Individual scarves will be sewn together to create the world's longest –the current record stands at 33 miles.
If Leeds is successful games would be held at Elland Road, the home of Leeds United. Deadline for the bid is November. Sheffield and Hull are also bidding to be host cities. To get involved visit www.backthebidleeds.com where people can work to the scarf knitting pattern.
