Fears for coast as oil speculators hold up tankers
Conservationists yesterday voiced fears over oil tankers held off a World Heritage coastline waiting for oil prices to rise.
Ten oil tankers carrying about one million tonnes of crude oil have been waiting in Lyme Bay, on the Jurassic coast on the Dorset-Devon border.
The tankers are thought to be earning oil speculators 1m a day as they wait in a proposed Special Area of Conservation.
Simon Cripps, Dorset Wildlife Trust's chief executive, said: "This is an accident waiting to happen. Even a minor spill or accident would devastate one of the world's most valuable and sensitive coasts, killing animals and plants and ruining livelihoods for years."
