Fewer exhibitors as Bakewell Show feels economic pinch

Visitors enjoyed a variety of attractions at the 181st Bakewell Show yesterday, although organisers said the economic downturn had affected the number of exhibitors taking part this year.
According to the committee that runs the show, some farmers who have traditionally been annual visitors have decided not to attend this year, either because of the economic situation or because they faced increased transport costs after fuel prices went up.
The two-day show, which continues today, started its history as purely an agricultural event, but now includes livestock classes alongside pet shows and spectacular displays involving stunt ponies.
Yesterday’s programme also included cattle judging, show jumping, a goat show, vintage cars, a parade of hounds and classes for Arab and Palomino horses, former racehorses and miniature ponies.
The organisers said today’s attractions would include commercial beef classes, sheep judging , Shire horses, Shetland, Dartmoor and Exmoor ponies and children’s show ponies.
There will also be a vintage motorbike display and pigeon and poultry competitions.
Gate prices for the show are £13 for adults and £11 for concessions but accompanied under-16s get in free.
