Five escape lightning bolt blaze

A mother and four teenagers had a lucky escape after a bolt of lightning blew a hole in their roof and caused a blaze during the stormy weather.

The woman, her three daughters and their friend fled after lightning struck the house in Upton, Dorset. It triggered a fire which destroyed the roof of the semi-detached house.

Two of the girls were upstairs at the time, one suffering a minor leg injury, but everyone had escaped the house by the time Dorset Fire Service arrived.

Fire service group manager Tim Spring said: "The lightning appears to have gone in through the roof and then out of the side of the house.

"There's scorch marks down the side of the building. It appears to have blown a hole 8ft by 6ft and there was a roof fire." The mother and the teenagers were treated by an ambulance crew for shock.
