Flagship health centre set for official launch by MP

Wilberforce health centre in Hull

Wilberforce health centre in Hull

A NEW £16.5m health centre in Hull will be officially opened by city MP Alan Johnson on Friday.

The first patients were admitted to the city’s most expensive health centre in November, but it will be formally opened by Mr Johnson at 2.30pm.

The centre in Story Street will host a range of services and cater for up to 60,000 patients a year.

As well as housing sexual health services, which have relocated from Conifer House in Prospect Street, the five-storey building will be home to two GP practices, which will include a walk-in service for unregistered patients.

Public health advisers, paramedics, addiction services and a community cafe will also be based at the centre.

Dr Kate Guthrie, medical director for City Health Care Partnership and clinical director at Hull and East Riding Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Partnership, said when it opened: “The Hull and East Riding Sexual and Reproductive Health Care Partnership provides sexual health services across Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire and we are delighted with our move to the new premises, just a few minutes away from our old base at Conifer House.

“Our complete range of current services, treatment and advice, including our drop-in clinic will be available at the Wilberforce Health Centre from today.”

Work on the centre began late in 2009 and it is the 10th to be built in the city under the NHS Local Improvement Finance Trust scheme.

It was designed, developed and delivered by Citycare Ltd on behalf of NHS Hull as part of the national Lift programme.
