Flood protection scheme gets under way
A POWER station, three railway lines and more than 9,000 homes will be protected by a new flood defence scheme which is underway
The project, costing 11.9m, will raise and widen a kilometre of an existing embankment at Swinefleet, near Goole, which prevents flooding from the Humber and the Ouse. The scheme is one of the first to be built as a result of the Humber Strategy, a 100-year plan for flood risk management.
It is part of a partnership the Environment Agency has set up with specialist engineering firm Birse Civils, with design consultants Halcrow and Black & Veatch.
Work started on June 29 with steel sheets being driven into the ground to keep rocks and soil out and allow repairs and improvements to be made.
It will eventually protect not only Keadby Power station, but also two A roads and the M18 motorway from flooding. It will also protect 9,400 homes and 1,200 commercial properties.
