Flying pigs lift spirits
Ebor may have been a washout but these spectators refused to be beaten by the rain and trotted off to spend Ladies Day watching pig racing instead.
Salvaging the champagne they had bought in anticipation of Ladies' Day yesterday at York Racetrack, and dressed in their finery with obligatory wellies, they headed instead to York Maze, where they bet amongst themselves on six Hampshire Crosses racing round a 100 metre track.
Mrs Gill, from York, said: "We had been waiting every day to see whether or not the racing would go ahead. When we knew it wasn't, we thought we would head to the maze and watch some pig racing. The pigs are half the size of horses, they smell a bit more and they are not as fast but it was great fun."
The 41-year-old hairdresser had taken three days off work for Ebor and was determined not to miss out on a day at the races.
Farmer Tom Pearcy, who owns York Maze, welcomed several coach-loads of people who had the same idea.
"There has been a real Dunkirk spirit. The pigs are much more fun than the horses – it's more up close and personal with it all – and there's no form book with the pigs," he said.
Organisers of the Ebor meeting, one of the biggest in Britain's horse racing calendar, were forced to cancel when the track became waterlogged.
