Food for thought as children are given a taste for healthy eating
CHILDREN were given a taste of healthy eating yesterday by a chef who is campaigning for better meals in the nation's primary schools.
Fi Bird, who is self-taught and was a finalist on the BBC's Masterchef programme, was in York to give a cookery demonstration to pupils from the city's Park Grove Primary School.
Mrs Bird and her husband, Dr Stephen Bird, are the founders of Stirrin'Stuff, which works in partnerships to educate children about food.
She was also promoting the city's annual food and drink festival, which began on Friday and will run until Sunday. This year's theme is "crude food" which aims to give advice and promote recipes on cooking with natural ingredients.
Mrs Bird, who is a member of the Guild of Food Writers and lives in Angus, Scotland, has written a book called Kids' Kitchen which is aiming to get more youngsters involved in cooking and enjoying a healthy diet.
The cookery demonstration was staged at the wine merchants and delicatessen, Field & Fawcett, which is based at Bingley House Farm at Grimston Bar on the outskirts of York.
Cathryn Fawcett, who runs Field & Fawcett with her husband, Peter, is a Gold Taste Award winner for her baking.
