For sale at £295,000: That cottage on the Yorkshire Tea box

BEING a genuine chocolate-box cottage is a proud boast – but one Yorkshire seaside property is known in homes throughout the country.

Beckside, in Staithes, near Whitby, has been seen by millions as the house on the Yorkshire Tea box.

It also one of Britain's most photographed homes, pictured on souvenirs, postcards and calendars of the seaside village.

Now the historic property, which sits by the quayside next to the lifeboat station overlooking Roxby Beck and the harbour, is up for sale for 295,000.

It is a holiday cottage and has been owned by property investment company Hall White for the last 10 years.

Andrew Revitt, who owns the home with business partners Clare Revitt and Chris and Fran Peace, said: "A friend saw it and picked up the brochure for us. When we saw it we fell in love with it and bought it.

"It was a bit tired so we renovated it but we really tried to keep its character because we didn't want to spoil it at all."

He added: "This area of the village is one of the UK's most photographed places, so the cottage features on everything from postcards to the Millennium calendar and on brochures and adverts promoting the East Coast, and, of course, on the Yorkshire Tea box.

"I've lost count of the number of people who have said: 'We've seen your cottage on a chocolate box, tea tray, tea box and so on."

Dating back almost 250 years, the cottage was built at a time when James Cook strode the streets, never dreaming he would become one of the world's most celebrated mariners.

He moved to Staithes as a teenager to work in a shop and stayed for two years before his boss introduced him to the ship-owning Walker family in Whitby who helped him fulfil his destiny.

Beckside started life as a fisherman's cottage when Staithes was one of the busiest fishing ports on the east coast and later became the home of the lifeboat coxwain.

It has been a holiday home for many years and has a large sitting room, kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor, two bedrooms on the first floor and another bedroom on the second floor. It also comes with a coveted parking space, which are hard to come by in the village known for its narrow streets.

The property is always fully booked thanks to its location and the village's popularity.

Staithes's character and its sheltered harbour bounded by high cliffs have made it a magnet for artists and tourists. Some locals have even nicknamed it "Leeds on Sea" because so many wealthy city dwellers have bought second homes there.
